But I can't afford to travel.
Traveling is an investment & it's worth every penny.
But if you find yourself in a penny shortage, not to worry. Here are a few tips for ballin' on a budget:
#1. Work Abroad: Working for trade makes seeing the world a lot easier - not only do you get a free place to stay but it's a great way to make new friends. It's also a huge resume booster. Check out WorkAway for opportunities across the globe.
#2. Public Transportation: Rome2Rio is a great resource to not only get from point A to point B within your budget, but it also allows you to gauge about how much you'll be spending on transportation before hand so you know what to expect and can save accordingly.
#3. Pack with intention: Take what you really need and leave the rest. I learned this the hard way. The first time I went to work in Costa Rica for 2 months, I had more pairs of cute shoes (I was barefoot all summer!) than the bug spray, sunscreen and granola bars I so desperately wished I had. Once you're there, you'll want to buy souvenirs anyways. Better to save your money for artwork and handmade bikinis than WAYYY overpriced aloe vera for your sunburn and essential oils to soothe your mosquito bites.
#4. Be flexible: Even the flight can be affordable if you're patient and diligent. Having a flexible calendar is key. Long layovers can knock off a few hundred bucks. And sometimes (2) one-way tickets are cheaper than a round-trip flight. I have had fantastic success with Google Flights to compare prices, dates, airlines & destinations. My most recent purchase was a ticket from LAX to Paris for $350!
#5. Put it on my tab: If your heart is telling you to buy a plane tickt, buy a plane ticket! The finances have a way of figuring themselves out once you have the right motivation. That might mean picking up shifts at work, babysitting on the weekends, or selling clothes on eBay. May not sound ideal at first, but knowing that the extra cash is paying for an exotic getaway makes the sacrifice far less painful. Set an intention and make it happen! :)
Con amor y alegría,
